Purpose in the Single Season
I’m a 26 year old single. That statement doesn’t define me, it’s just a part of me. It’s a part of who I am at this time in life, but it won’t always be true. One day I may be a wife, a mother, a grand mother. Titles change and roles change but what doesn’t change however is your identity; what you are truly known by. For us, our identity lies in Jesus. It lies in what He’s done for us on the cross and what He’s said to us and about us. I don’t
Sometimes in our single hood, we can allow it to define us, especially when we’ve been single for so long. Our hearts can become so easily bitter for our hope deferred for a husband. We easily identify with the “forever alone” meme and if we’re not careful images, thoughts and feelings related become our truth. Being single was never meant to be a castaway island experience, it’s a time just like any other to grow in our relationship with Jesus and as Colossians 2.7-9, New Living Translation, says, “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body”.
What are you allowing to define you? Do you live off God’s bread alone, His word, or do you live off of your current circumstance of singleness? Seasons in life come and go, we aren’t to be defined by them but rather refined through them. It’s not always easy, no one said it was supposed to be, but when you live off of God’s truth, life truly is much better and clearer.
Reflect: There is purpose in your single season, but first you have to know that and believe that. What is Jesus doing in you right now? Is He asking you to draw near to Him? Is He working on your vulnerability/ honesty in your relationships? Is He telling to get closer to your church community? What is it? Ask Him, He wants to show you what things He wants to do in you during this season and He wants to show you where He wants you to be to flourish His kingdom.
