Authorities Established by God
"When Moses' arms grew tired, Aaron and Hur brought a stone for him to sit on, while they stood beside him and held up his arms, holding them steady until the sun went down. In this way Joshua totally defeated the Amalekites." (Exodus 17:12-13)
When I hear the word, 'president,' my mind automatically goes to the avenue of 'leadership,' and one of my favorite leaders in the Bible is Moses. Why? He is so relatable. The Lord commanded him to speak to Pharaoh, and he says that he has trouble speaking out loud. He would tremble, ask questions and complain when God wanted him to do something, and it's not usually the easiest task!
Simply reading the following passage from Exodus 18:13-17 made me feel so tired for Moses!
"The next day, Moses had the special job of judging the people. There were so many people that they had to stand before him all day.
Jethro saw Moses judging the people. He asked, “Why are you doing this? Why are you the only judge? And why do people come to you all day?”
Then Moses said to his father-in-law, “The people come to me and ask me to ask for God’s decision for their problem. If people have an argument, they come to me, and I decide which person is right. In this way I teach the people God’s laws and teachings.”
But Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “This isn’t the right way to do this. It is too much work for you to do alone. You cannot do this job by yourself. It wears you out."
Reality is that when it comes to politics, not everyone is going to agree. Not everyone is going to like the new laws or the president. But as followers of Jesus, we are to truly believe that when God elevates a leader, He knows what He's doing. Being a class president in elementary school was a lot of pressure for me at such a young age, so I can't even imagine how much pressure there is in running an entire country. I know that it is 100 percent exhausting physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. So, like Aaron and Hur, instead of just watching and murmuring let's lift up our president in prayer so that he is aligned with the Lord, to make the best decisions. And let's pray for protection over him. Someone in a high position like that is battling opposition in all the realms all the time.
Some might say, "Well, if only he'd make this decision, and say that thing, things would be better. Shoot, if I was president...." Let's kill off that pride right now, shall we? Whether things are looking good or bad, God is still SOVEREIGN. As He does what He does best, let's be in partnership with Him, and PRAY.
So today, as you journal and pray with a genuine heart, I want to encourage you to meditate on this scripture:
"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." (Romans 13:1)
