Helper, Comforter, Spirit of God

I think it is safe to say most if not all of us have been thrown for a loop this year. In such uncertain times, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and scared about what may happen in the future. Yet, we know God is not surprised, scared or overwhelmed. He has given us the indwelling of His Spirit that we may take heart in all times and remember where our hope truly lies.

In John 14, Jesus tells us of the Holy Spirit, whom He and the Father would give to the believer after His ascension:

  • “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” (John 14: 15-17, English Standard Version)

While it is evident the world does not know the Spirit of God, we can be confident that we do know Him because of our love for Jesus. He who loved us so fully through death on a cross has not left us to figure things out alone. We can take comfort in this, that we have the help of God, the Spirit of truth, as we navigate through the life God has given us.

  • “Jesus answered him, ‘If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.’” (John 14:23, ESV)

The act of giving us the Holy Spirit is an act of God’s love. We can take comfort because we know God cares for us. His Spirit testifies to us the reality of Jesus Christ, reminding us that we are loved and cared for.

  • “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:26-28, ESV)

We do not have to be troubled or afraid by what we see going on in the world. The Holy Spirit is with us, reminding us of God’s truth. We know the truth through the word of God, for the truth of the victory of Christ and all this means for the believer lies there.

I encourage you to take comfort in the Spirit of God who dwells in you; for though we are promised suffering in this life, we know God is always with us. Whether we are in good times or bad, we know we can trust in God, that He is good and we have a promise far greater than now in the eternal life of Jesus Christ.
