Listen
Have you ever listened to a song, and it changed your whole mood? Have you ever heard a song at the right moment that was able to encourage you, make you happy or speak to your soul? Ah yes, that is the power of music. That is the power of a few notes and instruments playing in the background. Music is one of the few things in this world that can unite people. No matter what race, background, gender or ethnicity you are, good music means good vibes. There is a connection between humans when we listen to music. But there is also a connection between music and God.
There are times where I feel most connected to God when I am listening to music. When I close my eyes, let the words sink in and allow the melody to pierce my soul, I begin to think about everything He has done for me. With tears rolling down my face, I have my own worship session right in my room, car or wherever I am because God speaks through music.
God created music so that we may glorify Him. The book of Psalm is filled with several scriptures imploring us to sing to the Lord. In Psalm 96:1, it says, "O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord, all the earth."(Psalm 96:1, King James Version). Psalm 47 tells us to "Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises." (Psalm 47:6, KJV)
Through the scriptures, we see the people of God give God praise through music. We know one day that we will be singing in heaven, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing." (Revelation 5:12, KJV) By these scriptures, we see the importance of music to God.
Music is also a form of communication with Jesus. Sometimes a song speaks to your soul more than the words of a preacher. Why is that? Because the power of the Holy Spirit is speaking through the song to you. Music is simple. Sometimes that song only says Jesus, Jesus, and tears are flowing down your face. I've heard countless stories where sinners who are now saints say they were saved because of that song they heard that night. God speaks to us through things we understand. Sometimes it's people. Sometimes it's the preacher or situations. Sometimes it's movies, shows, books and sometimes it is music.
There have been times where I was going through a tough week, and a song dropped in my soul. I recall one time when I woke up with a song in my head. The song was so loud I thought I was wearing headphones. When I got into my car hours later, that song I woke up with was playing on the radio. The next day in church service, the preacher called me to the altar only to confirm what God already told me — he would never stop fighting for me. God speaks through music.
He speaks through music inspired by Him. He speaks when our hearts are open and our will is laid at His feet. When we open our mouths to sing to Him, His presence surrounds us because "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." (2 Corinthians 3:17, KJV)
Think about it. Look at King Saul. When the evil spirit was upon King Saul, once David played his harp, the spirit of the Lord was able to dwell with Saul and the evil spirit left. (2 Samuel 16:14:23, KJV)
We are connected to Jesus through Godly music. As Christians, we need to fill our cars, homes, phones and our life with God's music. When we do this, His presence will abide with us, and when He speaks, we will know it is Jesus. We will be able to receive and be healed, restored, set free and blessed.
God knows the right song to drop in our hearts at the right minute. He puts us in situations where a random person passing by is blasting Chris Tomlin, " Our God is greater" or "Remind Me Dear Lord" by Dottie Rambo.
He changes the song on our phones to the song He wants us to hear. When we wake up in the morning and play our playlist, just by listening to it, we feel like we can tackle the day because the songs on the list remind us that we are overcomers.
The human connection with music is powerful. It helps us through every facet of life. I don't know what we would do if music didn't exist. But, even more-so, music with Jesus is like the blood running through our veins; we need it.
