Standing on God's Word

Have you ever met someone that cannot keep their word? I know we all are guilty of canceling plans sometimes because we simply don’t have the energy to do it. But I’m talking about someone that seems to always have to “cancel” or never shows up when you are counting on them. We see this person as undependable, their word has no weight to it, we cannot take them at their word and we no longer trust their word.

Because we have victims of broken promises, vows or even simple commitments like meeting for coffee too many times, we tend to measure God’s promises in the same light. We have no real reference for a true promise. A promise that will withstand time, doubts, sicknesses, fears and many human weaknesses.

God has many promises for His children and we get excited about them (as we should), but as time passes and we don’t see any promises fulfilled in the way we were expecting, we start thinking God is just like those friends or family members that didn’t keep their word. We get discouraged and lose hope for something that was promised to us.

Many of us have heard the great news that Jesus resurrected on the third day and if it wasn’t for that third day, you and I would not have received salvation. I love hearing the message of the resurrection and I am not trying to minimize it, however, I never hear anyone talking about those two days before the resurrection. Jesus tells His followers that He would have to be crucified but that He would resurrect on the third day. There’s two days in between the third day; some disciples during the lull started to wonder if Jesus was really going to come back from the dead. It is our human nature to doubt something we don’t understand. The disciples were in chaos for two days; they saw their teacher, messiah and friend die in a cruel way and He was supposed to come back from that? For two days they saw their hopes and dreams in a tomb.

Some of us might be living those two days right now. It seems our promises have taken far too long to come to pass now. We have given up on the idea that His promises will be fulfilled for us. We see the pandemic we are living in now, we think there’s no possible way they can come to fruition now. So, how do we keep our hope alive?

There is a powerful key we have in order for us to hold onto the promises of God — believe God’s word and stand on it. There are so many promises God has declared over our lives, the problem is that we forget that God is bound by His word. Whatever He has said in His word, He cannot go back on.

“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken and will He not make it good and fulfill it?” (Numbers 23:19 Amplified Bible Version)

So will My word be which goes out of My mouth; It will not return to Me void (useless, without result), Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11 Amplified Bible Version)

In order to know God’s promises, we need to know the word of God and stand in it. When we stand on the word of God, we must:

  1. Believe it.

  2. Confess it.

  3. Declare it until it comes to pass.

Our human nature tells us when something is taking too long, it must mean it will not happen. Let us see God as the promise keeper. Is there anything too difficult for our God? Is there a promise you have been waiting for that seems overdue? Remind God of His promises for your life. Declaring the Word of God is reminding God not because He has forgotten but because we have stopped believing.
